How to Train your Colonoscope: Turn an Unwieldy Beast into your New Best Friend!

Dr. Kleiman is a staff surgeon in the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, MA, and holds an academic appointment of Assistant Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine.  A native of New Jersey, he completed the combined BA/MD program at Rutgers University & Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  He then completed his general surgery residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center and then a fellowship in colon & rectal surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell & Columbia Campuses and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. 

Dr. Kleiman joined the staff of Lahey in 2017 and currently serves as the Director of Robotic Colorectal Surgery and is the Program Director of the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC) initiative.  He is an active member of ASCRS and currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Young Surgeons Committee and is a member of the Engagement Committee and Young Researchers Foundation.  His clinical interests include colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, robotic and laparoscopic colorectal surgery, and advanced endoscopic resection of large colorectal polyps. 

Dr. Matthew Kalady is a Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. He serves as the Director of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery and also holds the John L. Marakas Nationwide Insurance Enterprise Foundation Chair in Cancer Research.  He is the Director of the Ohio State Colorectal Cancer Center and also the Medical Director of the Clinical Cancer Genetics Program.  Dr. Kalady graduated cum laude from Harvard College and received his medical doctorate from Duke University.  He completed his general surgery training at Duke University Medical Center and subsequently completed a colorectal surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, where he remained as faculty for 14 years. There he served as the Vice-Chairman of the Department of Colorectal Surgery; the Director of the Comprehensive Colorectal Cancer Program; and the Director of the Sanford R. Weiss, MD, Center for Hereditary Colorectal Neoplasia.  He holds several prominent national positions including a seat on the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, and he is a Trustee for the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery Research Foundation.   He is on the editorial boards for Annals of Surgery, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, and the British Journal of Surgery.  Dr. Kalady is an international expert in colorectal cancer and hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes.  He is a past President of the International Society of Gastrointestinal Hereditary Tumors, and a past President of the Collaborative Group of the Americas for Inherited Gastrointestinal Cancer.  He is an NIH/NCI-funded basic science researcher focusing on colorectal cancer genetics and has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles.  His main clinical interests are colorectal cancer, hereditary syndromes, and minimally invasive surgery, and has consistently been named a Castle Connolly and US News and World Report Top Doctor.

Dr. Sonia Ramamoorthy is a Professor of Surgery and Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at UC San Diego Health System and President-elect of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. She completed both her clinical research fellowship and her general surgery residency at UC San Diego, and a Colorectal Surgery fellowship at Washington University’s Barnes-Jewish Hospital. She earned her MBA at the Rady’s School of Management, her MD/MS at Boston University School of Medicine and her BA degree at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Ramamoorthy’s research interests include colorectal cancer, the application of new technology to colorectal surgery and quality related outcomes. She has authored over a hundred papers and chapters in colorectal surgery and remains an enthusiastic innovator and educator in the field of minimal invasive surgery.
